Content farms are site's that either "scrap" content from other sites, or allow article submissions to create content that contains ads to generate income.

Content farming: When someone copies content from other sites purely to satisfy the search engines. Their are many bots (computer programs) that will find this content and add it to other sites mainly for the purpose of generating money for the person who purchases such a program.

Content farms on the other hand look much more legitimate. Content farms provide their writers with user-friendly web-based publishing systems and run very cost effective operations.

A content farm is a site that scrapes content from other sites and slaps ads against it. Demand Media meanwhile has an army of freelancers who create original content that they put ads against. It's a crucial difference.
