Google brand links, does it mean that ecommerce sites should start promoting their products along with their brands, like promoting a jacket for being a jacket might make less sense then promoting the jacket for “American Eagle Jacket.” How do you promote products for brand links?

Submit the product brand name in Google base submission, which boost and promote your brand name and to get more traffic in your website.
Otherwise, you need to target the audience with your keyword by creation of quality content and link building techniques. Social Media will have an important role to improve your product's exposures.

oh you have mistaken the term 'brand links'. Brand links means promoting your site domain url rather than keyword. For ex: if your site is shopping65.com, you have to promote shopping65.com rather than it's keyword 'best shopping portal'.

I must say that's quite an interesting perspective you have provided and I think that it will indeed be a very good thing to promote the website link instead of the selected keywords as it will provide a better outlook to all the other products too.

- News buzz....etc[:)]

Maybe big brands with trust like facebook, amazon, ... are in favor now.
But one of the latest changes in the algorithm - mega sitelinks - doesn´t favor e-business at all. You only receive 1 rank within the SERPs (including your sitelinks) and not several ranks for each of your brand-URL...
maybe that´s whatmoseaaron was referring to?
